Preparing Your Lawn for Spring
The arrival of spring means it’s time to revive your lawn. The colder weather of winter affects your yard and lawn care equipment, so you'll need some proactive maintenance to return your lawn to its former glory. We've created the following guide to getting your yard or farm ready for spring. If you have any questions or want to explore lawn care equipment for sale, head over to Four Brothers Outdoor Power in Royse City and Terrell, Texas. We also proudly serve those in Garland, Canton, and Greenville.
1. Inventory Your Lawn Care Equipment
Start by ensuring you own all the lawn care equipment you need. Maybe your blower is on its last legs and it's time for a replacement. Maybe you want to make your yard maintenance more efficient and finally invest in an edger. Go over your current inventory of lawn care equipment and take note of anything you're missing. Then head over to an outdoor power equipment dealer (like Four Brothers Outdoor Power) to get what you need before you'll need to use it.
2. Get Your Lawn Mower Ready
Your lawn mower likely spent several weeks sitting in storage. It's not ready just yet for peak performance. A few maintenance tasks will get your lawn mower ready to go.
Start by inspecting the undercarriage and remove any debris. Next, make sure the blade is sharp. A dull blade is not only less efficient, it can actually damage your grass. Always check that the blade is sharp enough and be sure to replace it when the time comes.
If you own a riding mower, be sure to fill up the fuel tank. You'll also want to replace the oil, air filter, and spark plugs if you didn't do this before storage.
3. Clear Your Lawn
There's likely a collection of debris that's settled on your lawn. Left unaddressed, this debris can get caught in your lawn mower's undercarriage. It will also interfere with your lawn's ability to absorb the nutrient-rich products that you'll be applying later. Take a quick pass over your yard and clear away any debris. A blower makes this task easy, blowing debris into large piles for easy removal.
4. Give Your Lawn Nourishment
The colder temperatures and reduced rain of winter can be hard on your yard. Get your grass back to ideal health using nutrient-rich products. If you notice any bare patches, plant new seeds. Water it daily until it's tall enough to be cut. You'll want to save your first mowing until the new grass reaches the same height as the grass all around it or until it reaches two inches high. Once you do your first mowing, add fertilizer to the grass. It'll add necessary nutrients and help promote growth.
If you maintain a garden, consider adding fertilizer to help your plants grow. If you notice pesky bugs or weeds, get products to help kill those infestations.
5. Cut Your Lawn
Before you mow your lawn for the first time, let your mower sit in the sun for about an hour. This will help it warm up, which leads to an easier start-up. Try to remove about 1/3 of the grass blade. For the first six weeks of spring, aim to mow every five days. This will help prevent overgrowth, which happens when the grass gets cut in a way that stunts the root.
